Today’s question comes from a Marco Style friend. She purchased this long blush J. Crew dress over the summer:
Rather than purchase something new for an upcoming holiday party, she wants to know if she can make this work. I said with the appropriate accessories, yes! Here’s how to make lighter colors winter appropriate.
Add fur
You can immediately make lighter, more delicate fabrics seem more holiday ready by adding fur accessories. Instead of wearing a necklace, top the dress with a luxe faux fur scarf or collar and you’ll create an glamorous holiday-ready style.
Imagine this faux fur stole over that beautiful blush—what a pretty winter color combination. And you’ll stand out from the sea of little black dresses!

A faux fur cowl or snood scarf is also a nice choice because it is easy to throw on and you don’t have to worry about it all night. This gray version from World Market looks luxe in real life without being too furry—a.k.a. you won’t die of heat at an indoor party—plus it’s on sale for only $12.50.

Of course, wearing fur around your neck means there’s no room for a statement necklace. You know I never suggest heading to a holiday party without at least a little bling! So you should choose some sparkly earrings and a nice bracelet to add the right celebratory, dressy feel to your look. On black Friday I ordered these Buddy Love earrings and they are perfectly holiday appropriate.
Choose a Statement Earring

You could also echo the color of your dress with some of the tassel-style earrings that are so stylish right now. But skip the embroidery floss version and look for something a bit more upscale.

These earrings (also from World Market) are only $8.50, echo the tones of the dress and add some nice sparkle.

For a bracelet, choose a statement piece like this pave crystal fringe bracelet. Or go with a stack like this one (on sale for only $17!):

Incorporate a Jewel Tone
If you hate the idea of adding fur (or are worried about a hot flash during the event), you can also look at other options to top your dress. Choose one of these pashminas (only $11 on Amazon and available in 40 different colors!) in a festive color that compliments your dress and your complexion and wear it as a scarf over your dress. I am partial to the Hot Pink as it will complement the pale blush tone of the rose gold and has a distinctive regal feel that will stand out in a crowd.
You could also contrast, though, with something like the Green, which also has a more traditional “holiday” feel. For these, I’d stick with the traditional gold jewelry and let the scarf’s color shine.
Finish the Look with Closed-Toed Shoes
Leave the sparkly holiday sandals in the closet and choose something with a closed toe. I’d go a shade or two darker than the dress you are wearing. If you are wearing a maxi dress, don’t forget boots or booties are an option, too.
I looove the idea of incorporating faux fur with that beautiful dress! Love the jewelry options too. Good call! 😃
