The thick of summer—it’s prime time for laying by the pool or beach. If you’re anything like me, you want to stay protected from the sun, but also look good while you’re soaking up some Vitamin D. In the days of Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook, you never know when you’ll be caught on camera. These are my favorite products that keep you looking good and free from sunburn. Also, don’t forget to view my post on sunless tanners to get that skin in shape before you set foot outside.
Must-Have Waterproof Makeup and Skin Products for the Beach or Pool
The Best Tinted Sunblock for Face
Invest in a tinted product with sunblock in it so you can start with an even base and build from there.
MDSolarSciences Mineral Tinted Cream SPF 30, ($30 from Amazon.com)
This is my new favorite any time I know I’m going to be outside. The product is lightly tinted to provide coverage for a variety of skin tones and it works perfectly for me. It’s also long-lasting and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes so if you take a quick dip you don’t have to worry about it washing off.
Dr. Brandt Pores No More Multi-Performance Stick SPF 45, ($32 from Jet.com)
This five-in-one, water resistant complexion perfecter is designed to blur pores, providing a bit more coverage than the cream. The color is also a tad darker if the other option is too light. What I love is you just rub the stick around your face, blend with a sponge or your fingers, and you’re ready to roll. I recently used this daily before a beach vacation and headed home without a sunburn or clogged pores.
Top it off with powder
Rodan + Fields Enhancements Mineral Peptides Powder, SPF 20, ($30 from RodanandFields.com)
I have this loose powder in both the Medium and Bronze shades. To start, I use the Medium all over to set my tinted sunblock. Then, I add the Bronze on my cheek bones and under my jaw to add a bit of contour.
Sure, you can forego it if you’re planning to swim all day. But if you’re heading to a pool or beach party, you want to accentuate your lashes, especially since you’ll probably skip any other eye makeup.
Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Angel Waterproof Mascara ($7.50 from Walmart.com)
The brush looks like a tiny comb so it lengthens and separates as you apply. Sometimes waterproof mascara can be extra clumpy, but this formula is just right.
Rodan + Fields Enhancements Lash Boost ($150 from RodanandFields.com)
I also condition my lashes before I hit the pool with Rodan + Fields Lash Boost. At $150 a tube, I was skeptical about this product, then tried it when I received some as a gift. Well, I hate to say it, but it works. The marketing claims say the product makes lashes grow longer and darker. I believe it strengthens your lashes, keeping them from breaking or falling out, and allowing them to grow longer and fuller. Either way, my lashes definitely look more impressive before mascara, which is important in a situation where my mascara application is limited. The tube cost is pricey, but when you consider I’ve been using it for several months now, it’s the cost of one eyelash extensions application, and it creates similar results for much longer, I guess it’s not that bad. That said, Amazon does sell some other less expensive lash serums.
The Best SPF Lip Gloss
I recently read that lips are particularly prone to skin cancer because while people apply and re-apply sunblock all over their body, lips are often left behind. This spurred me on an extensive search for a lip product with color that contained SPF. It’s not easy to find one.
Colorescience Sunforgettable Lip Shine SPF 35, Siren, 0.12 Oz, ($29 from ColorScience.com)
I ended up ordering ColorScience Sunforgettable Lip Shine SPF 35 in Siren. This creamy lip gloss comes in five shades if you count clear and has a pleasant, minty taste. It’s a new pool bag essential. The bright red shade is great to brighten up your face when you don’t have much other makeup on.
Supergoop MintFusion Lip Balm SPF 30, ($10 from Amazon.com)
If you prefer a clear product, Supergoop!’s balm is thick, effective, minty and decently priced at $10.
The Best Sunblock
Okay, there’s a lot of talk about which sunblock ingredients are and are not healthy. For now, I’ve been trying to choose natural versions or versions with higher quality ingredients whenever possible. My general strategy for a full day in the sun is to apply one full coat of lotion-style sunblock before going outside, then to reapply with spray. Some natural lotions turn white when you go in the water, though, not at all a Marco Style approved look.
Moroccanoil Sun Lotion Spf 30, ($32 from Nordstrom)
This lotion is lightweight, hydrating and soaks right in. No white residue or heavy feeling on skin. Love it.
Coola Sport Sunscreen SPF 50, Fresh Mango, 5 Fl Oz, ($32 from Amazon.com)
If you prefer a slightly heavier lotion, Coola classic sunscreen is similarly clear and residue-free, plus I love the Mango scent. The Coola Spray is also my favorite. It has staying power and features organic ingredients.
