Many of us are working from home for the foreseeable future. If you’re like me and this isn’t your norm, you might be feeling a bit worried. Years ago I got rid of my home “desk” because it had become more of a storage space than anything else. Now, I’m wondering how to make other spaces in my small apartment hospitable to being productive and not killing my muscles by sitting awkwardly all day. It seems like my Friday work-from-home default of sitting cross-legged on the couch with a laptop in my lap might not cut it. Here are some items I’ve been thinking of adding to my work-from-home setup. And bonus: they are all still available for fast Amazon shipping!
You’d think working from home means lots of time to leisurely sip coffee or tea. In reality, I often make my cup of caffeine in my nice mug, open my laptop, start responding to instant messages, and return to it cold hours later. This little combo of a heater and stainless steel mug keeps your beverage hot. There are less expensive heaters without a mug, but they all work best with a flat-bottomed mug, which is included here.
URPOWER 2nd Version Essential Oil Diffuser Aroma Essential Oil Cool Mist Humidifier with Adjustable Mist Mode
Add invigorating or energizing scents to your work day with an oil diffuser that also moistens the air. Don’t forget to add a set of pure essential oils.
Speaking of #selfcare, if you’re skipping regular spa appointments, a personal massager would be a good choice. I have one like this and use it for my neck, back, even hips and quads.
Did you know you can buy fresh plants on Amazon? In a time when you probably won’t be getting out as much as you’d like, a little green could cheer you up. And I hear it’s hard to kill succulents. Check out these cute pots, too:
Didn’t raid the supply cabinet before you headed home from the office? This reusable notebook can be filled with up to 32 pages of writing and then uploaded to the cloud for storage and organization. Then, wipe down the pages with water and start over.
If you, your spouse and maybe a few kids are at home, there are going to be devices and cords everywhere. Charge them all in one convenient spot. Prefer a more natural look? Try this one:
Let’s be real. You say you’re not going to work from your couch. But you’re going to work from your couch. I’m writing this blog post from my couch right now! Make it a LITTLE more ergonomic with a lap desk. This one holds a tablet and a phone, plus has a nice bamboo top. You can also go more masculine:
Another solid option is a rolling side table that can be moved easily and placed wherever you like.
Okay this is not glamorous or sexy. But neither is back pain. My office has expensive ergonomic chairs. At home I have plastic dining chairs from Overstock.com. A little lumbar support just might save the day. You also might consider a memory foam foot rest:
This footrest is simple, ergonomic and has memory foam. Let the comfort begin.
Or, you could invest in a new chair. I’ve always wanted to try one of these exercise ball chairs. This seems like a solid way to not watch all of your muscles atrophy. Plus you can pop the ball off and do a few exercises for work breaks.
I also have been noticing that my home lighting is woefully dark, which leads to me feeling lethargic and uninspired. This lamp has 7 different brightness settings so it can be just right.
One other thing you miss when working from home… going to happy hour! Outfit a bar cart and roll it right over to have a drink at the end of the day. Or a little before… who’s telling?
