A few weeks ago I headed to a wedding in Jamaica. As the trip came closer, I realized my makeup routine needed some help. I knew it was going to be hot and humid and that a lot of photos would most likely be snapped. So, I booked a makeover at Sephora. Did you know you can go online and book a free 45-minute makeover at Sephora for a minimum purchase of $50? Nordstrom offers a similar service. When I got to Sephora I asked Shaye, my makeup artist at the Short Pump store, to recommend products that would withstand serious heat.
In this picture I am at the sweatiest I think I’ve ever been not during a workout. The wedding—while absolutely beautiful—took place a few hours after a rain storm and the heat hung heavy in the air as we gathered on the cliffs for the ceremony and reception. About an hour before this photo was taken there was perspiration literally dripping off my face effectively eliminating the possibility of adding more powder. All I could do was dab with a paper towel and chug water. I’m not claiming to look “I-just-woke-up” fresh, but I also don’t think I look completely melted so we’ll call it a win.
These products are a mixture of Shaye’s suggestions and my tried-and-true favorites. It’s not my whole Jamaica vacation makeup look, but these are my top picks for keeping your face shine-free and your makeup intact during hot, humid weather.
The silky texture provides a smooth base for makeup, plus SPF 30 adds a layer of skin protection if you’re going to be outside. The bottle seems pricey at $65, but considering the size and that the product actually contains ingredients to reduce wrinkles—not a typical primer additive—it’s worth the splurge.
Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow and Liner in 33 – Secret Boudoir, $14
This is THE bargain product you need to buy now. Simply scribble the pencil in fat lines over your lid, blend with a brush or your finger, and you’ve got a flawless base that’s waterproof and stays all day for under $15. My eye makeup has been staying mostly in place for about 15 hours and I attribute it to this base.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liner in Black, $22
I discovered this product after putting out a call for my friends’ favorite eyeliners. This one was most repeated so I gave it a try. The product holds up to its name and so far wins the award of most dependable eyeliner I’ve found. For this look, add it on top in a cat eye.
Shaye matched me with this product through Sephora’s Color IQ Matching Service that provides foundation, lip and concealer recommendations by capturing an image of your skin. So far, the staying power has impressed me.
I was also impressed with the texture, blend-ability and coverage of this product, and apparently I’m not alone since it’s sold out at Sephora, but still available at Nordstrom.
After being talked into and ultimately trashing two other translucent powders in the past, this was Shaye’s suggestion I was most skeptical of, but she told me if I wanted my makeup to stay in place, I should try this powder as it’s formulated to absorb oil and keep shiny skin matte. So far, it’s another success. I have definitely noticed my skin staying shine-free all day, even when I’m sweating.
When a Nordstrom makeup artist put this product on my friend during a makeover, I was immediately sold. Her lashes looked so long I’d have believed they were fake. Impressive, especially for a waterproof formula.
To finish, a few spritzes of my favorite makeup setting spray and you should be sweat-proof and sealed!
