Why You Need to Visit Rapp Session’s Holiday Pop-Up

Rapp Session's holiday Pop-Up, Christmas Session, runs through the end of the year

Rapp Session’s holiday pop-up is a unique wonderland where retro holiday classics like the infamous Christmas Story leg lamp and green bean casserole meet gourmet holiday indulgences like homemade eggnog and seafood towers. The special experience, called Christmas Session, will be up for holiday spirit-ing through the end of the year.

When you arrive at Christmas Session, you’ll notice that the restaurant is covered in holiday décor. Lights, ornaments, nutcrackers, wreaths and signs hang throughout the restaurant. Even garnishes and barware are now housed in festive holiday bowls. There are themed cocktail napkins and you don’t want to miss the “photo booth” complete with a chair, Christmas Story-style leg lamp, and even photo props. You might think the staff would hate this, but not at all. In fact, when my friends and I stopped to pose for a picture in another area of the restaurant, a helpful server pointed us to the chair and props and even offered to take our picture (talk about millennial-friendly service!).

The Menu at Rapp Session’s Holiday Pop-Up

The menu has also been completely redesigned for the pop-up. When you grab your seat or stool, you’ll be presented with a Christmas card that’s filled with seasonal spirits and snacks.

First let’s talk drinks. The selection runs the gamut with traditional options like Uncle Eddie’s Eggnog, a delicious combination of Blade & Bow bourbon, spiced rum and house eggnog mix or Noel’s Hot Cider spiked with your choice of bourbon, rum or brandy that is pleasantly balanced and not too sweet. You can also go nontraditional with choices like Naughty Child featuring Ophir gin, Chambord, lemon, rosemary and red wine plum syrup topped with rose or my personal favorite, the Glen Cocoo featuring Cirrus vodka, raspberry-infused Campari, lemon, gingersnap syrup, egg white, and cinnamon tincture. Chocolate fans should sample the Kringle like Kris, made with Vida Mezcal, house-made Mexican mocha powder, steamed milk, espresso and hazelnut topped with whipped cream.

The food selection is a similar combination of decadence and whimsy. The regular raw bar selection has been enhanced with seafood towers—choose your size and get a combination of oysters, clams, crab clusters, steamed shrimp, and smoked bluefish dip. My friends and I went with the small $35 version and were quite pleased with the amount of seafood we received.

You’ll also find lots of fun riffs on classic holiday dishes. The popular stuffin’ muffin from Merrior is on the menu. This ball of oyster stuffing that’s flattened, griddled, and topped with bacon gravy is one of my favorite dishes—I’m wondering how many I can eat before the end of the year. There’s also country ham and pickled red beet deviled eggs, Monkey Peters—Soppressata stuffed with cream cheese and drizzled with pepper jelly, Hayman Street Potatoes topped with brown butter and rye crumbs, green bean casserole, a delicious tuna casserole, and even turkey tamales. Homemade desserts span options like apple cobbler and warm cookies.

As if this isn’t enough, through December 23, Rapp Session is putting a spin on the 12 days of Christmas. Come in on any (or all) of these days and donate five dollars or five canned goods for FeedMore and you’ll get a raffle ticket. You can purchase as many tickets as you like. Raffles will be held twice daily and you can win items ranging from a Rappahannock trucker hat or oyster knife and gloves to a $100 Rappahannock gift card, Rappahannock boat farm tour and $50 Merroir gift card, or even a gift card pack with $50 gift cards to each of Rappahannock’s restaurants.
